Striated herons are found in wetlands of Tulunadu especially in the mangroves. They are resident birds and found in river sides, back waters, and estuaries. They have blue grey wings. Their under parts are white and have a black cap. A dark line extends from bill to under the eye. It has black bill and yellow legs. They feed on small fish, frogs, and insects. They sometimes use bait by dropping leaf or feather in water and prey on approaching fish. They build nest using sticks either on the ground or on small trees or shrubs. The clutch is 2-4 eggs which is pale blue in colour.
