Lesser-goldenback Woodpecker

The golden back also known as lesser flame back is a common bird in Tulu Nadu. They live in pairs or small groups. They an fe found in open forests, cultivation and also in urban areas. The male has golden wings and black rump. The underparts are white with dark stripes. The head is whitish with black nape. It has a red crown and crest. The females are paler with black fore crown spotted with white. They feed on insects, beetles larvae, termites and nectar. During breeding season (Feb-July) they make holes in a tree with a horizontal entrance and a small cavity inside. They lay 3 eggs and both parents share their duty of raising.
